Freshman Academic Preparation & Requirements

Standardized Test Requirements (SAT or ACT)

Your high school courses should include:
  • 4 years of English
  • 4 years of mathematics through pre-calculus
  • 3 years of science (including biology, chemistry and physics)
  • 3 years of social studies and/or history

In general, we look for students who have earned A’s and B’s in a challenging curriculum. We pay close attention to exactly which classes you have taken and how you have performed in them, instead of focusing on a certain GPA.

Many students enter Rensselaer with AP/IB credits or credits from another college. You may bring in a maximum of 32 credits when you begin at Rensselaer.

Whether your school offers AP classes, an IB curriculum, or honors/college prep classes, we look at the classes you have been taking in the context of what is available to you, taking into account differences in preparation and academic background.

Advanced Placement (AP) Credit

Credit is granted to many entering freshmen through Advanced Placement (AP) exams at high schools or satisfactory completion of selected college courses.

In general, if you earn a score of 4 or 5 on the AP exam, you’ll usually be granted academic credit at Rensselaer. You’ll need to submit test score reports or college transcripts to our Registrar's Office before registering for classes.

College Course Credit

Courses completed at other colleges may be considered for transfer credit at Rensselaer. The Registrar will have courses evaluated by the appropriate departments on campus. Please note that transfer credit will not be given for any college courses taken while in high school if these courses were used in obtaining the high school diploma.

Students must submit an official transcript of their grade(s) from the other college(s) to the Office of the Registrar when they complete the course(s). Students must also include photocopies of course descriptions of all the courses for which they are requesting transfer credit consideration.

For complete information, please refer to Rensselaer’s Advanced Standing and Advanced Placement Policy (PDF).

International Baccalaureate (IB) Credit

Rensselaer regards the International Baccalaureate (IB) program as a rigorous advanced program of study, and you’ll be pleased to find similar opportunities in our interdisciplinary courses and majors, and undergraduate research opportunities.

In general, if you earn a score of a 6 or a 7 on the IB higher level exam, you will usually be granted academic credit at Rensselaer.

Students may be granted advanced standing or credits for the International Baccalaureate Higher Level.

For complete information, please refer to Rensselaer’s policies on the International Baccalaureate (IB) Higher Level Examinations (PDF).
