Facts & Figures

Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) was established in Troy, New York, in 1824 by Stephen Van Rensselaer “for the purpose of instructing persons ... in the application of science to the common purposes of life.”

Our mission is to educate the leaders of tomorrow for technologically based careers. We celebrate discovery, and the responsible application of technology, to create knowledge and global prosperity.

The university offers degrees from five schools: Architecture; Engineering; Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences; the Lally School of Management; and Science; and an interdisciplinary degree in Information Technology and Web Science. In addition to undergraduate studies, all five schools offer master’s degree programs and doctorates.

The Institute consistently ranks in the top 50 among U.S. universities for overall academics and among the top 50 worldwide for technology. Our faculty members include National Science Foundation Presidential Faculty Fellows, members of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Sciences, and other eminent professional organizations.

These distinguished faculty members work directly with students — doing research, solving problems, teaching, and interacting. Many of our professors have close ties with top global corporations and organizations.

Rensselaer occupies a 275 acre hilltop campus overlooking the Hudson River in Troy, New York. We’re located in the heart of New York’s Capital Region, putting a world of cultural and recreational opportunities within reach. This area offers both a relaxed lifestyle and easy access to the high-energy metropolitan centers of the Northeast.

Rensselaer Hartford

Rensselaer Hartford, a branch campus of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, provides a challenging educational environment and a dynamic learning experience for students who need to balance their professional, academic, and personal lives. The Hartford campus offers only graduate-level programs.
