Take the SAT or the ACT

All standardized tests must be taken by December 31.

Take either the SAT, or the ACT (with the writing section). We do not prefer one test over the other, and if you have taken both the SAT and the ACT, you may submit official scores from both tests. Please include Rensselaer’s institutional code of 2757 for the SAT, and include the college code of 2866 for the ACT. This will ensure that your scores arrive at Rensselaer’s Admissions Office.

Redesigned SAT (for fall 2017 applicants and beyond): For students taking the redesigned SAT (beginning March 2016), Rensselaer will not require the writing portion of the test be taken (unless you are applying for one of our accelerated programs in law or medicine- see below). For students taking both the old and new versions of the test, both scores will be considered; however, we will not “super score” across the different test formats.

For students applying for fall 2017 and beyond, Rensselaer will not require students who choose to submit the ACT to take the optional writing section.

SAT Subject Tests are optional, unless you plan to apply to one of our Accelerated Programs in law or medicine (see below):

Accelerated Program Testing Requirements

For students applying to either the Physician-Scientist Program or one of the accelerated law programs, Rensselaer requires EITHER:

  • The SAT AND two SAT Subject Tests (one in math and one in science-student’s choice)

OR

  • The ACT (including the writing portion)

Redesigned SAT (beginning in March 2016—for fall 2017 applicants and beyond):

Rensselaer will require applicants for the Physician-Scientist Program or the accelerated law programs to submit EITHER:

  • The SAT (including the writing portion) AND two SAT Subject Tests (one in math and one in science-student’s choice)

OR

  • The ACT (including the writing portion)
