Research plays an integral role in Rensselaer’s vision of the technological university. The discovery and application of new scientific concepts and technologies are core goals for the School of Science.

Rensselaer students in the School of Science have the opportunity to do incredible things.

  • Dive into a living, breathing environmental lab at our Darrin Fresh Water Institute on Lake George.

  • Optimize performance of the Internet.

  • Research the impact of peptides as the cause of Alzheimer’s disease.

  • Build an animated 3-D model of a new disease-fighting drug.

  • Design new, efficient algorithms for medical imaging and diagnosis.

  • Test the severity of a virtual earthquake.

  • Join a lab group of students learning and researching cancer cell biology.
  • Explore new opportunities created by terahertz speed and terascale density.

The essence of science, as we see it, is learning by doing. Our students have access to powerful technology, including advanced optical analysis equipment, powerful graphics workstations for molecular modeling, and studio-style, computer-aided chemistry.

A strong emphasis is placed on applying course work to real-life challenges with an eye on the needs of the high-tech world of the 21st century.

The School of Science degree programs include many free electives, enabling students to tailor a curriculum to individual interests and talents. This added flexibility affords students the opportunity to begin accelerated programs, pursue dual degrees, or begin graduate work.
