Rensselaer students have many different options when preparing themselves for medical school.

You can major in almost anything at Rensselaer while preparing yourself for medical school. Most students who want to pursue medical school choose something in our School of Science (often biology or chemistry) but you do not have to.

Interested students may enlist the assistance of the Pre-Health Committee, a group of professors who will guide students interested in medical school (or other health professions) through their four years, making sure they are putting themselves in the best position possible when it comes time to apply to the professional school of their choice.

Physician-Scientist Program [view/download PDF]

In 1964, Rensselaer and the Albany Medical College were pioneers in initiating an accelerated degree program that enabled qualified individuals to complete requirements for both the B.S. and M.D. degrees in an accelerated time frame. Now, many years and hundreds of graduates later, we are expanding on our innovative approach and are offering a program that will graduate physicians who are intensively trained in medical research.

Qualified applicants who are accepted in the Rensselaer-Albany Medical College seven-year program will benefit from a unique science-based program built upon the rich tradition of Rensselaer's many years of technological innovation, as well as Albany Medical College's similar tradition of leadership in health-care research.

Students must apply to the Physician-Scientist Program in the senior year of high school, and the annual application deadline is November 1. Please note that transfer students and international students, including Canadian citizens, are not eligible to apply to this program. For additional information on applying to the Physician-Scientist Program, please visit http://admissions.rpi.edu/undergraduate/admission/freshman/bsmd-application.html.

Please note that we do not accept applications for the combined Physician-Scientist program from international students, including Canadian citizens.

It allows sophomore students in any major—who are self-directed in their learning, thrive on a culture of academic rigor and mentorship, and have a strong appreciation of human rights and social justice—to apply for early acceptance to the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

The Icahn School of Medicine holds up to three spots in its FlexMed program for Rensselaer sophomores who qualify for the program each year.

The FlexMed program builds on a strong educational foundation consisting of innovative research and clinical programs that provide students with the knowledge and support to become the next generation of medical and scientific experts. In response to major changes in the priorities of biomedical science and health care, the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai has expanded its renowned Humanities in Medicine program to become the first medical school in the United States to offer early acceptance to college sophomores from any major, with no MCAT requirement, for up to half of each entering class.
