School of Architecture

Admission is competitive and a creative portfolio is required. Applications and portfolios must be received by March 1, but we strongly suggest scheduling a portfolio review with an architecture faculty member before March 1. Architecture candidates are only considered for summer admission.

Applicants should have one semester of calculus or pre-calculus, some credit hours in science, and courses in humanities and social sciences to meet the core requirements for the School of Architecture. Please note: accepted students will be required to take a summer design course at Rensselaer that begins in May prior to their first semester of study at Rensselaer.

School of Engineering

Students applying to one of the engineering fields should have college-level courses in the following areas:

  • Two courses in calculus
  • Two courses in calculus-based physics
  • One course in chemistry
  • At least one course in engineering or an additional course in math or science

School of Humanities and Social Sciences

Students should have at least one semester of calculus or pre-calculus before transferring to our School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and some course work in the major field of interest.

Electronic Arts

Applicants to Rensselaer’s Electronic Arts Program are also required to submit a creative portfolio and an essay which should be connected to the work submitted in the portfolio and demonstrate interest in the program. The successful portfolio and application should include 10-20 examples of work that show promise as an artist and a desire to work with all the electronic arts tools. The portfolio should represent what the applicant considers to be his/her best work in any medium. Acceptable submissions include drawings, photographs, slides, CD-ROMs, video and audio recordings, music scores, and digital images.

Information Technology

Students who wish to transfer into the IT program should have at least 12 credits of college level work, including one semester of college calculus, a C++ programming course, and a science course. Students should have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, with grades of A and B in all courses, especially those related to the major.

Lally School of Management & Technology

Students should have at least one semester of calculus or pre-calculus before transferring to our management school, and some course work in the major field of interest.

School of Science

Students applying to one of the science fields should have college-level courses in calculus and lab sciences appropriate to the intended major.
